Passive House Update – First Things First
Construction is well underway at our first Passive House project in Brooklyn. We are excited to see this project come to fruition, with a super-insulated exterior envelope resulting in a dramatic reduction in cooling and heating needs. For this project, we teamed up with a Passive House consultant Ed May from Brooklyn to successfully integrate Passive House details into our design strategy.
In the early stages of construction, we are paying special attention to the interior side of the existing perimeter walls. The building is a 100-year old brick and wood joist structure, with a landmarked stone front facade. The exterior walls are being repaired; with all holes, gaps and cracks infilled. The entire surface is then parched with mortar. This will provide an good base for the next step, the installation of the air barrier.
The goal is to receive official certification from the German Passive House Institute when finished. Stay tuned!
