Hirshhorn Garden Update: Full scale mock-up
In order to test the construction of the proposed new stacked-stone partition walls, a full scale mock-up has been completed at the garden.
The stacked stone walls are to be built by Japanese stone masons, according to the ancient technique of “Nozurazumi”; modified and adopted by artist Hiroshi Sugimoto specifically for this project. The stone boulders will come from quarries in Pennsylvania, supplemented by dimensional stone from Wells, Maine for benches. The bench stone is the original material used in the exposed aggregate concrete walls built in 1972 which still surround the garden today.
The mock-up also includes sections of new planting and reclaimed paving which we are exploring for the new sculpture garden concept. The mock-up will remain in place until next year when construction is scheduled to begin.
