Future-Proofing a Sculpture Garden
Before construction of our architectural features can begin at the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden, a lot of new infrastructure has to go into the ground first. Recently, 2 large 15,000 gallon rainwater storage tanks were delivered and installed below the northern edge of the garden. As the garden is located up to 13 feet below street level, floodwater prevention is critical. New electrical distribution lines are being installed, together with data networks to support future digital and acoustical sculptures.
Pathways in the new garden are being built on concrete slabs supported by hundreds of piles. This ensures that new soil for trees and groundcover is less compacted, allowing for better plant growth.
