Collaboration with Hiroshi Sugimoto at Japan Society New York
The upcoming 2017-2018 gallery season at Japan Society opens with Hiroshi Sugimoto’s “Gates of Paradise”, an exhibition of Sugimoto’s latest photographs, combined with classical Japanese masterpieces of art from Japanese and American collections.
For this occasion, Japan Society asked Hiroshi Sugimoto and his architectural office New Material Research Laboratory (NMRL) in Tokyo to redesign the main atrium of the building, adding new art display areas on the upper and lower level. A large wall clad with Japanese cedar bark forms the backdrop for a field of custom tiles from Nara, Japan.
YUN Architecture collaborated with the Japanese design team and was responsible for bidding and construction administration. BMDC from New York was the general contractor.
