The upcoming 2017-2018 gallery season at Japan Society opens with Hiroshi Sugimoto’s “Gates of Paradise”, an exhibition of Sugimoto’s latest photographs, combined with classical Japanese masterpieces of art from Japanese and American collections.
For this occasion, Japan Society asked Hiroshi Sugimoto and his architectural office New Material Research Laboratory (NMRL) in Tokyo to redesign the main atrium of the building, adding new art display areas on the upper and lower level. A large wall clad with Japanese cedar bark forms the backdrop for a field of custom tiles from Nara, Japan.
YUN Architecture collaborated with the Japanese design team and was responsible for bidding and construction administration. BMDC from New York was the general contractor.
Plaster mouldings have arrived from the factory in Brooklyn and are being installed at the Central Park Residence. The gypsum mold sections are carefully being assembled on site and filled and pointed with plaster to make joints seamless and holes invisible.
YUN Architecture collaborated with architectural and ornamental plaster artist Foster Reeve to design and select motifs for the custom crowns and door mouldings.
Japanese craftsmen have started to apply the first of 3 coats of the traditional Japanese plaster called “Shikkui” on the interior walls of the Manhattan Tower Residence. While originally applied over lath in traditional Japanese architecture, this lime-based material is applied here over drywall to a total thickness of 6mm. The final coat achieves a smooth, matte, white finish which hardens over time as it absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide over many years after installation.
Additionally, the plaster is known to regulate humidity, is naturally antiseptic, antistatic (dust preventing), hypoallergenic, antifungal and mold resistant. The plaster surfaces have a slight directional texture to them, revealing the movement of the craftsman’s hand.
The Shikkui plaster mix was manufactured close to Fukuoka, Japan and contains special ingredients specifically chosen for this project. See also http://www.shikkui.com
Due to its height and slenderness, this residential tower experiences a good amount of story drift under high winds. The smooth, white surfaces of plaster are framed by minimal expansion joints, carefully located to allow for building movement and avoid cracking.
