Since our project at the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden is located within the protected historic landscape of the National Mall, we have been participating in a number of public hearings to discuss and determine “adverse affects” to the historic fabric (Section 106 process per the National Historic Preservation Act).
Our design carefully protects and restores many features of the existing garden, as introduced by the original Architect Gordon Bunshaft and later by landscape architect Lester Collins. This image shows a view from the fully preserved south overlook looking north. An enlarged reflecting pool can be seen in the foreground, proposed to display sculptures, but also to feature occasional performances. The north overlook, shown further back, has been increased and widened to better connect the garden to the National Mall beyond.
